My iGaging calipers are absolutely tremendous value for money – they aren’t the best on the market, but they’re about 90% the quality of Mitutoyos for less than half the price.
Inconveniently, a while back they started going haywire around 70mm and 100mm. Since they use an absolute encoder, they actually continue to work in other measurement ranges. But it’s still obviously a pain that I can’t reliably measure stuff close to 100mm.
Luckily, the fix worked out to be SUPER easy:
- put some denatured alcohol or Isopropyl on the slide
- open and close the calipers vigorously a bunch of times
- wipe dry with a paper towel, and continue sliding until all alcohol has dried
Just in case you REALLY want to see me muff pouring alcohol, here’s a video. All the kids are doing it these days.
